Marin Story – Macen Toledano

#BeThe22 #MarinsFriends

On the first anniversary of Marin’s passing, we asked everyone who ever had any opportunity to meet Marin to share their stories with us. Thank you, Macen, for allowing us to share it with others.

How did you know Marin: Growing up in Chinese Immersion together

Growing up in Chinese Immersion, I felt like all the people that I was surrounded with were like family to me. Despite that, I have never met another Filipino outside of any activities I’ve done in school until I met Marin. To us, being Filipino was both a symbol of friendship and culture we’ve always shared. Fast forward to just after winter break 2023, everyone in chinese class was talking about their vacations or previous places they’ve visited. Since Marin was at our table, she mentioned how she really wanted to go to the Philippines to experience the culture of her dad’s side. Although it was just seven years ago since I last visited home, I can vaguely remember details from that trip. Despite that, I distinctly remember saying something along the lines of, “The next time my family goes, we could take you along! You just have to pay for your plane ticket, of course!” As I said that, I remember her eyes lighting up and her smiling. Sadly, that was the last conversation I had with her. When I go back home, I will carry Marin’s memories with me and experience it anew for her. I am extremely grateful and proud for the person she became.
