On the first anniversary of Marin’s passing, we asked everyone who ever had any opportunity to meet Marin to share their stories with us. Thank you, Joel, for allowing us to share it with others.
How did you know Marin: Friend from Chinese Immersion
Marin was the first actual friend I ever made back in 3rd grade. We talked about random nerd stuff like dragons and book series like Wings of Fire and Warriors—well it was more like her just talking to me because I hadn’t read any of them (now I’ve read Wings of Fire but that’s besides the point.
Not only that, but she also got me into Pokémon. I was clueless about it but was willing to listen. She got me to watch the anime through constant pestering (which worked). This turned into a 7 year long obsession with the whole franchise. Her constant enthusiasm and friendliness somehow got through my skepticism about being social and made me the person I am today. Because of her, I now am more comfortable talking to people. Her kindness and acceptance was an inspiration to everyone around her.
Even though we grew apart in middle school and joined different friend groups and cliques, a part of her still resides in me. In every friendship I make, in every person I talk to and even just any person who takes the time to see the man I am.
Who knew an 8 year old could have that much influence on a person?
