Beginning 2024-25 school year, the Marin Elizabeth Lacson Memorial Foundation aims to honor her legacy by granting an annual scholarship of $1,022 to at least six deserving recipients, recognized as Marin’s Friends.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Must be between the ages of 17 and 22 years old as of May 1st of the award year.
- Applicants must resemble the virtues & character of Marin as defined by the Marin’s Friends Selection Advisory Committee. Applicants do not need to meet every virtue and/or characteristic, but more will be deemed favorably.
- Leadership Skills: Someone who is not afraid to venture from the pack while showing kindness and empathy.
- Work Ethic/Commitment: Someone who does not shy away from doing the work even if it’s hard.
- Respect: Respect and decency towards everyone; empathy and kindness towards others.
- Integrity: Honesty, fairness, and principled.
- Community Involvement: Participation in community service or volunteer activities, demonstrating a commitment to giving back.
- Academic Performance: Dedication, curiosity, and application of knowledge. It goes beyond grades to reflect critical thinking, creativity, and readiness for future challenges.
- Applicants must be nominated by someone on the Marin’s Friends Selection Advisory Committee OR accompanied by at least two recommendations. Valid recommendations can come from school counselors, teachers, coaches, and/or other respected community members. Recommendations should be based on Marin’s virtues and character.
- Applicants must submit an essay of no more than one page that explains why they qualify for the award.
- Applicants may submit multiple years as long as they meet the qualifications and requirements listed above. Recipients are eligible to receive the award only once.
- Applicant attributes below would be viewed more favorably:
- Current student or graduate of Barrington High School
- Current or previous boy’s or girl’s high school lacrosse player
- Current or previous resident of Tower Lakes, Illinois
- Current or previous member of Crossfit Barrington
Decision Making
The Marin’s Friends Selection Advisory Committee is tasked with reviewing applicant submissions to determine how well they meet the qualifications and requirements listed above. Finalists will be presented to the Foundation Board which is tasked with selecting the actual recipients. The Foundation Board only needs to agree by simple majority when determining the recipients. The number of recipients may vary from year to year, with a minimum of six, and will be decided solely by the Foundation Board.
Award Details
The award of $1,022 will be used solely to offset an expense incurred by the recipient at an accredited two or four year institution or trade school.
Expenses incurred by applicants not attending an accredited two or four year institution or trade school may still qualify. Examples include equipment required to start a business.
