The “Be The #22” Award is inspired by the annual Barrington High School Girls Lacrosse Marin Lacson “#22” Character Award established during the 2023-2024 school year. The establishment of the BHS Marin Lacson Award wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and support of Brian Forde, the Barrington High School Girls Lacrosse Boosters, the student athletes and coaches, BHS staff, and the wider Barrington community. Their collective effort in creating this award reflects the profound impact Marin had on those around her and ensures that her legacy continues to inspire future generations of athletes and community members alike.

Background

Marin’s impact on her lacrosse team mirrors the unsung heroes in sports teams. These individuals may not top the statistical charts or receive widespread recognition, but their influence on team dynamics and morale is invaluable. They embody qualities like pragmatic kindness, consistent effort, and selflessness—traits that elevate team culture and inspire others to do their best.

In professional sports, such players are often veterans who might be past their prime but contribute off the field or court, guiding younger teammates and fostering a positive environment. Their contributions go beyond mere statistics; they shape the team’s identity and help create a supportive atmosphere where everyone can thrive. These individuals are cherished for their ability to elevate team cohesion and morale, traits Marin exemplified in her life.

Marin’s story reminds us that greatness isn’t always measured in achievements or accolades but in the daily commitment to doing things with kindness, effort, and sincerity. Just as in professional sports, where these qualities are valued for their transformative impact, Marin’s approach to life serves as a powerful example of how small acts of kindness and dedication can profoundly impact those around us, making the world a better place.

Objective & Purpose

The “Be The #22” Award serves a vital purpose in today’s society by recognizing and celebrating student athletes who exemplify integrity, selflessness, and positive influence within their teams and communities. In a culture often dominated by social media, achievement-centric values, and peer pressure, the award emphasizes the importance of doing the right thing and staying true to one’s moral compass.

By highlighting athletes who may not always appear on the statistical leaderboards but consistently demonstrate character and contribute significantly to their teams’ success, the award encourages a broader definition of success beyond mere performance metrics. It sends a powerful message that kindness, effort, and ethical behavior are valued and celebrated.

Moreover, the award serves as a beacon for young people navigating societal pressures, reminding them that acts of kindness and integrity are not only admirable but essential for building a better community and society as a whole. By reinforcing these values early and frequently, the award program helps shape future leaders who prioritize empathy, teamwork, and ethical conduct.

The “Be The #22” can help foster a culture where individuals are recognized and encouraged for their positive impact, reinforcing the idea that small acts of kindness and moral courage can create ripple effects that benefit everyone. This initiative not only celebrates current achievements but also nurtures qualities that contribute to a more compassionate and supportive society in the long run.

You might believe that existing scholarships and awards already fulfill this role, but they share a common limitation: recognition typically occurs only at the end of the season or school year, and often focuses on just one individual. Yet, on every team, multiple student athletes step up at different times. Our aim is to redefine this approach by consistently recognizing and celebrating these student athletes throughout their journey. We want to underscore their significance and acknowledge their contributions continuously.

Think of it as a “Player of the Week” concept, traditionally based on measurable achievements like goals scored. However, our focus extends beyond statistics to highlight contributions that consistently enhance team success, such as leadership, teamwork, and other impactful qualities. Something that’s not easily quantified but obvious when you see it.

How It Could Work

We respect the fact that each school/district may have specific requirements. The below is merely a suggestion on how it might work. We encourage dialog in order to come up with a viable solution that can be implemented.

Eligibility:

All high school student athletes, regardless of sport or gender and grade level, are eligible. The award emphasizes qualities beyond athletic performance, focusing on character and contribution to team success.

Selection Process:

Each week, coaches from each respective team selects a player who best exemplifies the character to “Be the #22”. Criteria include leadership, sportsmanship, work ethic, team spirit, respect, integrity, community involvement, and academic performance.

We ask that the Boosters respect and honor coaches’ selections, without interference, to uphold the integrity of the award.

Criteria:

  1. Leadership Skills: Ability to inspire and lead teammates, commitment to team goals over personal achievements.
  2. Sportsmanship: Behavior towards opponents, referees, and teammates; ability to handle pressure and setbacks graciously.
  3. Work Ethic/Commitment: Dedication to training, practice attendance, and continuous improvement.
  4. Team Spirit: Cooperation and support for teammates, demonstrating a team-first attitude.
  5. Respect: Respect towards coaches, teammates, opponents, and officials; empathy and kindness towards others.
  6. Integrity: Honesty, fairness, and adherence to rules on and off the field.
  7. Community Involvement: Participation in community service or volunteer activities, demonstrating a commitment to giving back.
  8. Academic Performance: Achievement and commitment to studies, reflecting discipline beyond sports.

Recognition:

Selected student athletes wear a visible “special” item (e.g., jersey number 22, helmet sticker, badge) during team practices and games to signify the honor.

  • During home games, a brief announcement is made announcing the “#22” student athlete and what they represent.
  • During any game, the “#22” accompanies the normal team captains when meeting the opposing team at the start of the match.
  • When playing an opposing school with “Be The #22” Award also in place, introduce the “#22s” directly to each other preceding the match.

Annual Award

The Athletic Department or Booster tracks recipients throughout the school year. The student athlete receiving the weekly recognition the most times across all sports during the school year is awarded the “Be The #22” Award.

The recipient of the “Be The #22” Award is announced at the school’s annual banquet and receives a scholarship of $1,022. A plaque at the school commemorates annual recipients, explaining the background and purpose of the award.

What the Foundation Will Provide

The Marin Elizabeth Lacson Memorial Foundation will provide partially or in full the following:

  • The annual award of $1,022.
  • Reasonable costs for the “special” items needed.
  • We are happy to work with anyone (Athletic department, boosters, etc.) who needs to be involved to implement and administer the program. We will make this easy to do.
  • We are open to anything else you need to get the program implemented at your high school. Let’s have a conversation.
